The senior partner at Stowe Family Law, Marilyn Stowe is one of Britain’s best known divorce lawyers with clients throughout the country, in Europe, the Far East and the USA. A proud citizen of Leeds, (and a supporter of Leeds Rhinos Rugby League club since the age of 7!) she was educated at Leeds Girls’ High School and then achieved one of the highest degrees awarded in her year at the University of Leeds.
With more than 30 years of experience handling divorce cases and family law proceedings Marilyn is “regarded as one of the most formidable and sought after divorce lawyers in the UK”. She is highly skilled at uncovering attempts to disguise wealth and hide assets, ensuring everything is taken into consideration in reaching a settlement. Her particular speciality is conducting investigations in cases where substantial assets are in dispute.
Marilyn also achieved prominence in uncovering previously undisclosed medical evidence that was a critical element in securing the freeing from prison of Sally Clark, the mother wrongly jailed for life for the murders of her two infant sons. It was a case that she took completely on a ‘pro bono’ basis after being moved by the plight of a woman who was a fellow mother and lawyer.
She also appears frequently on live television, broadcast worldwide for the BBC and Sky TV, and is the resident legal expert on ITV’s This Morning. The BBC also uses her expert insight for discussion and phone-in advice programmes across its regional radio network in Yorkshire and Humberside. She is the author of three books: `Divorce -a New Beginning’, published in 1993; ‘No Looking Back’ published in 2002; and most recently ‘Divorce & Splitting Up: Advice from a top divorce lawyer‘.
Marilyn was among the first 35 solicitors, barristers and ex-judges to qualify as a family law arbitrator in February 2012. The family law arbitration scheme operates in England and Wales and was developed by the Institute of Family Law Arbitrators (IFLA). As a result she is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).
In 2012 Marilyn became a member of the Legal Advisory Group to the Law Commission regarding matrimonial property. This follows her role working in a similar capacity during the review of the rights of cohabiting couples in 2007.
Marilyn is a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. This is a worldwide association of practicing lawyers who are recognized by their peers as the most expert and experienced family lawyers of their respective countries. Membership is by invitation only.
Marilyn Stowe is also recognised by the Legal 500 Series, an independent and definitive guide to the legal market in over 70 countries as “a high profile divorce practitioner renowned for the energy she expends on behalf of clients”.
Stowe Family Law is the UK's largest specialist family law firm with 7 offices: London, Leeds, Harrogate, Hale, Wilmslow, Wetherby and St. Albans.
Divorce Advice From a Top Divorce Lawyer
NEW BOOK: Divorce & Splitting Up – Advice from a top divorce lawyer (2015 edition)
Borne out of continuing demand, answering readers' questions from her award-winning blog and the ever-growing need to clarify the law which is complex because it is intended to be used by lawyers not people in general, the book incorporates lots of helpful tips and changes in the law since first being published in December 2012.
Following cuts to legal aid April 2013 the Law Society forecasted the total number divorce cases to be affected would reach approximately 650,000. In anticipation of so many people being denied access to solicitors one of the country’s top family lawyer's published a new book providing guidance and support to those going through what, for most, is an extremely traumatic time.
Divorce & Splitting Up is written by Marilyn Stowe, a regular specialist contributor on the subject for the likes of the BBC, Sky News, The Telegraph and Financial Times. With her specialist law firm, Stowe Family Law LLP, Marilyn Stowe has helped more than 10,000 clients over her 30 year career. This excludes the effects of the book published at a low price with the aim of reaching the widest possible audience in a period during which so many people have been struggling to achieve justice on their own in the absence of legal aid. The book complements her tireless work giving free divorce advice on her successful blog marilynstowe.co.uk.
Rather than focusing on vengeful legal battles the book first aims to help readers decide if divorce is actually the best option for them then, if so, how to achieve an amicable divorce with a satisfactory outcome for all parties. Every divorce case is inevitably different but by featuring checklists, case studies, worksheets and FAQs the book gives step-by-step explanations and easy-to-understand divorce advice that will help the reader face the realities.
Drawing upon Marilyn Stowe’s friendly, no-nonsense style, Divorce & Splitting Up guides the reader through the important decisions and challenges they will come up against including:
Can the relationship be rescued?
How to choose a good solicitor
How to keep your costs down
What happens to the house?
The inside track on child support
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Marilyn Stowe’s book is available for £5.99 and £0.99 for Kindle. Buy your copy of Divorce & Splitting Up here
